Week 5 - MICU and Thailand Finale

Monday, November 4th

  • We had the morning to work on our presentations for this week! We also had to organize the gifts we bought from the weekend :) Around 12:00pm, we headed out to get some lunch at none other than the Green Cafeteria. We both were in the mood for some fried rice, so that's exactly what we got. We had lunch on our own today, so Cynthia ordered the meal on our own! (be proud of us ;))

  • 1:30pm - We met Dolla and Dr. Pang back at the MICU to look up patients and discuss treatment for hyperthyroidism and thyroid storm. We worked through this case all afternoon, and decided to continue it tomorrow.

  • We headed over to Tesco (Walmart of Thailand) around 5:00pm and ordered pizza from The Pizza Company. They accidentally gave us the wrong pizza, so we got one for free! After shopping around for some knick knacks, we headed back to the apartment to work on presentations for Thursday. These were coming up quick, so it was time to get to work!

  • After working on presentations, we turned in for the evening to get some rest. :)

Tuesday, November 5th

  • 8:00am - We met Dr. Pang, Dolla, and two 5th year pharmacy students for patient discussions and rounds. Rounds this morning consisted of more vancomycin dosing and adjustments, and administering appropriate medications for a hemorrhagic bleed.

  • After rounds, we were able to work on our presentations before heading to lunch.

  • 12:00pm - lunch at the green cafeteria with Dolla. Megan had Leng with pork (it's like a brother to the Tom Yum soup from last week), and Cynthia had a spicy noodle mix with Fuk Yew soup (Yes, that is spelled correct!). We got there a little early today and beat the crowds.

  • Afterwards, we were able to go work on presentations again. We spent the afternoon fixing up details for all four presentations, and getting things ready to go for Thursday afternoon.

Wednesday, November 6th

  • 8:00am - Met Dr. Pang, Dolla, and pharmacy students in the ward. We worked up our patients from yesterday, and talked about vancomycin dosing and other antibiotic treatment in a chemotherapy patient.

  • The other part of the morning was for us to get any patient information we missed for our presentations on Thursday. We double checked all of our information, and made sure everything was squared away for tomorrow.

  • 12:00pm - Lunch with Dolla at the green cafeteria. Today, we ended up trying the fried chicken! Everyone had told us the chicken in Hat Yai is the best, so we knew we had to try it at least once.

  • After lunch, we spent the afternoon practicing presentations and getting any last minute information for Thursday.

  • We had dinner at none other than The Limb. Tonight, we both decided to have some thai food, and stopped by the market on the way home for some dessert. Megan got chocolate on chocolate of course, and Cynthia tried a lemon-filled vanilla donut.

Thursday, November 7th

  • PRESENTATION DAY!

  • Dr. Pang gave us the morning to practice our presentations, and get everything ready for the afternoon. We ran through the presentations a few times, and headed to this salad bar pretty close to the apartment around 12pm for lunch

  • 1:30pm - It was time for our presentations! We each had a patient case, then we presented on the P3 curriculum, PPE, and our overall Thailand experience together. We discussed heath care differences between America and Thailand, and shared our traveling/eating/friendship experiences these past 5 weeks! The presentation ended with some gifts from Auburn, just to show our appreciation.

  • We could not thank everyone here enough for everything they have done for us. Each preceptor, student, and faculty member had an important role in making our experience one to remember.

  • 5:30pm - Sin (5th year pharmacy student from last week MICU) picked us up for dinner! We went to a seafood buffet that had all kinds of food! There was a grill on the table similar to MK where you could cook all of your seafood. They had main courses, appetizers, fruits, desserts, and really good shaved ice that you can make yourself.

  • After dinner they dropped us back off and we hung out with them, Mantha, Fafa, and Vee for the night!

Friday, November 8th

  • Our last day of rotation... :( We arrived at the internal medicine ward at 8:30am for our last patients workups. We worked with our preceptor Pang and pharmacist Dolla to figure out the correct vancomycin doses for some patients.

  • Dolla took us to the convention center where they had a book fair with food booths. We ended up looking around and trying different snacks. We got the roti (sweet pancake with coconut milk) for dessert and walked across the street for some fried rice.

  • After lunch, we headed back to the apartment to organize our things, figure out checking out, and pack. Mantha came by so we could officially say goodbye to her :(

  • At 4:30, Dolla picked us back up to go to campus, meet Pang, and head to "The Hill." There is a Big Buddha that looks over Hat Yai and Songkhla. After parking the car we started our walk towards the Buddha, and it started POURING down! We ended up having to turn around and take shelter, but it was a lot of fun. We headed back to the car, which was parked at a restaurant. The four of us (Cynthia, Megan, Pang, Dolla) met Usanee, Sutthiporn, Ping, and Non for dinner. It was set up family style, and we ate everything! There were many choices from pork leg to fish with mango salad.

  • We ended up being dropped off around 9:00pm, and we decided to go on a walk for crepes at the market. We took a little walk for the last time to enjoy Hat Yai, and prepare for our long travels head tomorrow.

Saturday, November 9th

  • Our last day in Thailand What an adventure ride it has been. We finished packing that morning, and Vee picked us up for one last lunch, and we ended up having a pig blood soup! We figured since we had tried every other part of the pig (stomach, liver, kidney, etc.), this would complete our taste testing. And of course it did not disappoint. Vee dropped us back off, and Ping and Non picked us up for our 4pm flight at 2pm from the apartment

4:00pm - flight schedule ••• Hat Yai ••• Bangkok ••• South Korea ••• Atlanta

Thank you for traveling along with us. We hope you all have enjoyed reading just as much as we have enjoyed writing our #MCThailandTakeover!
